What Is Allergy Testing?

Allergy testing is a diagnostic process used to evaluate whether the immune system reacts to specific substances known as allergens.

Each patient has a unique allergy profile. Understanding possible allergy triggers and how your immune system responds can help guide a personalized treatment and management plan based on your symptoms, lifestyle, preferences, and overall health needs.

Common allergens we evaluate may include:

  • Pollen
  • Dust mites
  • Pet dander
  • Mold spores
  • Certain foods, including milk, nuts, eggs, shellfish, and soy
  • Certain medications
  • Insect stings and venom

Types of Allergy Testing We Offer

ENT Centers of Excellence offers several clinically recognized allergy testing methods.

Skin Prick Testing

Skin prick testing is one of the most commonly used allergy testing methods and may help identify immediate allergic reactions.

During the test, small amounts of allergens are applied to the surface of the skin. The skin is then lightly pricked to allow the allergen to contact the skin. After approximately 15 to 20 minutes, your provider monitors for signs of an allergic response, such as redness or swelling.

Intradermal Allergy Testing

In some cases, skin prick testing results may be unclear or inconclusive. Additional testing may be recommended for further evaluation.

During an intradermal allergy test, a small amount of allergen is injected just beneath the surface of the skin. Your provider then monitors for signs of an allergic response.

This testing method may be used when evaluating certain medication or insect venom allergies.

Blood Testing (IgE Antibody Testing)

Blood testing may be recommended for patients who cannot undergo skin testing due to certain skin conditions, medications, or other clinical considerations.

During this test, a blood sample is collected and analyzed for IgE antibodies, which may help identify sensitivity to specific allergens when interpreted alongside your symptoms and clinical history.

Which Allergy Testing Method May Be Appropriate for Me?

Your healthcare provider will consider several factors when determining which testing method may be appropriate for your needs, including:

  • Severity and frequency of symptoms
  • Medical history
  • Current medications
  • Skin conditions or sensitivities
  • Overall health status

Preparing for an Allergy Test

Before your scheduled allergy test, your ENT provider will review testing instructions and preparation guidelines with you. These recommendations may include:

  • Avoiding certain medications, such as antihistamines, that may interfere with test results
  • Informing your provider about existing medical conditions or medications
  • Wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
  • Eating a light meal before your appointment

What Happens After Allergy Testing?

Once your test results are available, your ENT provider will review the findings with you, including:

  • Potential allergens that triggered an immune system response
  • Patterns or severity of allergic reactions
  • How the findings may relate to your symptoms and overall health

Based on your results, our team may recommend a personalized allergy treatment and management plan tailored to your symptoms, allergy profile, and lifestyle needs.

Potential treatment recommendations may include:

  • Medications, such as antihistamines, decongestants, saline nasal sprays, or other allergy medications, to help manage symptoms in some patients
  • Environmental or lifestyle modifications to help reduce exposure to allergens and irritants
  • Immunotherapy options, such as allergy shots or allergy drops, when clinically appropriate

Allergy shots are FDA-approved for certain uses. Allergy drops may be prescribed off-label under medical supervision and are not currently FDA-approved for this specific use.
