Common symptoms of sinusitis include nasal congestion, breathing difficulties, sinus pressure, and postnasal drip. While some cases are mild, some patients experience symptoms that can interfere with daily activities, sleep, and overall comfort.

Our team at ENT Centers of Excellence offers comprehensive sinus evaluations to identify factors contributing to persistent sinus symptoms and recommend treatment options based on each patient’s clinical findings and individual health needs.

What Causes Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is the irritation and inflammation of the tissues lining the sinuses. The sinuses are hollow, air-filled spaces behind the nose, cheeks, and forehead. They naturally produce mucus that humidifies the air we breathe and helps trap and clear irritants from the nasal passages.

Sometimes, the sinuses become irritated, which can trap mucus. This may contribute to mucus buildup, breathing difficulties, and sinus pressure. Some cases of sinusitis are mild, while others may lead to persistent breathing problems and discomfort.

Sinusitis can occur when swelling and irritation are present in the sinus passages. This may be due to common factors, such as:

  • Allergies
  • Viral infections (the common cold or flu)
  • Bacterial infections
  • Nasal structural abnormalities (nasal polyps or a deviated septum)

What Are the Symptoms of Sinusitis?

Sinusitis symptoms can vary in type and severity depending on the individual and underlying health factors. Common sinusitis symptoms may include:

  • Nasal congestion
  • Mucus dripping down the back of the throat, or postnasal drip
  • Runny nose with thick green or yellow nasal discharge
  • Facial pressure, particularly around the nose, eyes, cheeks, and forehead
  • Sneezing and coughing
  • Headaches
  • Sore throat
  • Low-grade fever
  • Fatigue due to poor quality of sleep
    Chronic bad breath, or halitosis

If you are experiencing ongoing, severe, or persistent sinus issues, consult with your healthcare provider, who can help guide you toward appropriate treatment plans according to your condition and the severity of your symptoms.

How Is Sinusitis Treated?

Sinusitis treatment options vary depending on the severity of your symptoms, potential underlying causes, and other individual health factors. After a sinus evaluation, your ENT physician may recommend any of the following treatment options:

Medications

Some patients may find relief from standard medications, such as:

  • Decongestants
  • Nasal saline rinses
  • Corticosteroids
  • Mucolytics

Before starting any medication, always consult with your physician to ensure safe and appropriate use. While these may provide some relief, they’re often temporary and may not be as effective for chronic or persistent sinusitis.

Balloon Sinuplasty

In some cases of chronic or persistent sinusitis, medications alone may not provide adequate symptom improvement. When appropriate, your ENT provider may discuss additional treatment options, including balloon sinuplasty.

Balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that may help improve sinus drainage by gently opening blocked sinus passages. During the procedure, a small balloon catheter is inserted into the affected sinus passage and carefully inflated before being removed.

As with any medical procedure, balloon sinuplasty carries potential risks and benefits, which your provider will review during your consultation.

Treatment recommendations are based on your symptoms, anatomy, and overall clinical findings.
