What Is Inspire Therapy?

Inspire® Therapy in Foley, AL

An Alternative Treatment Option for Select Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep-related breathing disorder that can contribute to disrupted sleep, daytime fatigue, concentration difficulties, and other health concerns.

While Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy is a common treatment option for OSA, some patients may have difficulty tolerating CPAP or may continue to experience challenges with consistent use.

At ENT Centers of Excellence, we evaluate patients with obstructive sleep apnea and discuss advanced treatment options, including Inspire® Therapy, for appropriate candidates.

What Is Inspire Therapy?

Inspire® Therapy is an FDA-approved implantable treatment option for certain adults with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea who meet specific medical criteria.

The Inspire® system works from inside the body and is designed to support normal breathing patterns during sleep without the use of a traditional CPAP mask or hose.

The system includes:

  • A small implanted device
  • A breathing sensor
  • A stimulation lead
  • A handheld remote used to turn the device on before sleep and off upon waking

How Does Inspire Therapy Work?

During sleep, Inspire® Therapy delivers mild stimulation designed to help maintain airway openness in coordination with breathing patterns.

The device is implanted during an outpatient surgical procedure for appropriate candidates.

As with any implanted medical device or surgical procedure, risks and potential complications are possible. Treatment outcomes and patient experiences vary.

Who May Be a Candidate for Inspire Therapy?

An ENT and sleep evaluation can help determine whether Inspire® Therapy may be appropriate based on your symptoms, sleep study findings, airway anatomy, and overall health.

Patients may be considered candidates if they:

  • Have moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea
  • Have difficulty tolerating or consistently using CPAP therapy
  • Meet BMI and airway anatomy requirements
  • Do not have complete concentric airway collapse

Eligibility is determined through a comprehensive medical evaluation.

Drug-Induced Sleep Endoscopy (DISE)

Some patients may undergo a Drug-Induced Sleep Endoscopy (DISE) evaluation before Inspire® Therapy.

DISE is a specialized procedure performed under sedation that allows the physician to evaluate airway anatomy and patterns of airway collapse during simulated sleep conditions.

This evaluation helps determine whether Inspire® Therapy may be appropriate for a patient’s airway structure.

Potential Benefits of Inspire Therapy

Individual outcomes vary by patient. Potential benefits discussed during consultation may include:

  • Treatment without a traditional CPAP mask or hose
  • Remote-controlled therapy activation
  • Alternative treatment option for select CPAP-intolerant patients
  • Support for airway function during sleep in appropriate candidates

Your physician will discuss potential risks, limitations, alternatives, and expectations during your consultation.

Risks & Considerations

As with any surgical procedure or implanted medical device, Inspire® Therapy carries potential risks and complications, which may include:

  • Infection
  • Discomfort
  • Device-related complications
  • Need for additional procedures

Not all patients are candidates for Inspire® Therapy, and treatment results are not guaranteed.
