Nasal Congestion Treatment in Foley, AL

Nasal Congestion Treatment in Foley, AL

Understanding Chronic Nasal Congestion and Breathing Difficulties

Occasional nasal congestion is common during colds, seasonal allergies, or temporary irritation. However, when congestion becomes persistent, recurrent, or difficult to manage, it may indicate an underlying nasal or sinus condition that warrants further evaluation.

At ENT Centers of Excellence in Foley, AL, nasal congestion is one of the most common symptoms we evaluate. Our team focuses on identifying the underlying cause of congestion and recommending individualized treatment options based on each patient’s symptoms and clinical findings.

Talk to Us About Your Congestion Symptoms

What Causes Nasal Congestion?

Nasal congestion occurs when tissues inside the nose become swollen or inflamed, narrowing the nasal passages and reducing airflow.

While mucus production may contribute to symptoms, persistent congestion is often related to inflammation, structural narrowing, or impaired sinus drainage.

Several conditions may contribute to ongoing nasal congestion.

Common Causes of Nasal Congestion

Allergies

Environmental allergens such as pollen, mold, dust mites, or pet dander may trigger inflammation within the nasal passages and contribute to congestion, drainage, and breathing difficulties.

Chronic Sinusitis

Chronic sinus inflammation may interfere with normal sinus drainage and contribute to long-term congestion, facial pressure, and recurring sinus symptoms.

Deviated Septum

A deviated septum occurs when the wall separating the nasal passages is significantly off-center, potentially restricting airflow through one or both sides of the nose.

Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps are soft, noncancerous growths that may partially block airflow and sinus drainage within the nasal passages.

Enlarged Turbinates

Turbinates are structures inside the nose that help humidify and filter air. When enlarged or chronically inflamed, they may contribute to persistent nasal obstruction.

Non-Allergic Rhinitis

Some patients experience nasal inflammation triggered by irritants such as smoke, strong odors, temperature changes, or environmental factors unrelated to allergies.

When Should Nasal Congestion Be Evaluated?

Nasal congestion may warrant medical evaluation if symptoms:

  • Persist beyond the expected duration of a cold or seasonal illness
  • Return frequently throughout the year
  • Affect one side of the nose more significantly
  • Do not improve with over-the-counter treatments
  • Occur alongside facial pressure, reduced sense of smell, or recurring sinus infections

Overuse of certain nasal decongestant sprays may also contribute to rebound congestion in some patients when used longer than recommended.

How Is Nasal Congestion Evaluated?

Evaluation typically begins with a review of symptoms, medical history, and a physical examination of the nasal passages.

Your ENT provider may also perform nasal endoscopy, a minimally invasive in-office procedure that uses a small camera to evaluate the nasal passages and sinus openings in greater detail.

This evaluation helps identify potential structural issues, inflammation, drainage problems, or other contributing factors affecting nasal airflow.

Treatment Options for Nasal Congestion

Treatment recommendations depend on the underlying cause and severity of symptoms.

Management options may include:

  • Allergy treatment and environmental management
  • Nasal sprays or medications to reduce inflammation
  • Saline rinses or sinus care measures
  • Balloon sinuplasty for select patients with chronic sinus obstruction
  • Turbinate reduction for persistent turbinate enlargement
  • Septoplasty for structural nasal obstruction caused by a deviated septum

Your ENT provider will review treatment options based on your symptoms, examination findings, and overall health needs.
